Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Union Institute & University offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degree programs tailored to highly motivated adults who seek academic programs that engage, enlighten and empower them in their pursuit of a lifetime of learning and service.
Since its inception almost 50 years ago, the non-profit, private university has offered specialized distance-learning programs that combine online and classroom coursework with high-touch faculty attention and an emphasis on social relevance.
Designed for busy adults no matter where they live and work, Union's degree programs are offered through online classes, brief residencies, face-to-face small classroom experiences, or hybrid models, all emphasizing relevant and transformative coursework taught by more than 400 experienced and award-winning faculty/scholar-practitioners.
One of the nation's oldest non-profit, private, distance-learning universities, Union Institute & University was founded in 1964 as a consortium of ten colleges including Hofstra University, Bard College, and Sarah Lawrence College. Union is actively involved in the communities where it has centers, including Cincinnati, Ohio; Miami, Florida; Los Angeles and Sacramento, California; and Brattleboro and Montpelier, Vermont.
The university belongs to national and regional higher-education associations, including the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and Universities; the Association of Vermont Independent Colleges; and the Consortium of Southern California Colleges and Universities. Union also maintains active membership with dozens of other educational organizations, including the Association of Governing Boards, the American Association for Higher Education and Accreditation, and was a founding member of the Council for Adult Experiential Learning.
Union Institute & University's core curriculum emphasizes creative and critical thinking, social relevance, and real-world action and practice. Its more than 2000 students pursue degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels in an array of disciplines.
Union offers bachelor's degrees in several different majors and concentrations, from environmental studies and maternal child health to public administration, social work, and criminal justice management. The Master of Arts program offers creativity studies, health and wellness, history, clinical psychology, and literature, in addition to an online Master of Education degree. Union's cohort-based doctoral degrees include a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in leadership, public policy, and the humanities; as well as doctorates in education and clinical psychology.
