Plaza College in Jackson Heights, New York, is a family-founded institution managed today by the fourth generation of the Callahans. Plaza College is known as the "college for business and medical careers," offering both Associate and Bachelor's degree programs in such areas as Business Administration, Information Technology, Accounting, and Medical Assisting. In 2002, Plaza College gained regional accreditation through the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (www.msche.org) and in 2007 obtained its 10-year accreditation status. Plaza College is proud of this "gold standard" within higher education.
Throughout its history, Plaza has upheld a tradition of offering students a high-quality education that will advance their lives both personally and professionally. Educating students for more than 90 years, the College has earned recognition for its excellence from employers and other academic institutions alike. Founded in 1916 as an independent institution based in Long Island City, Plaza moved to its current Jackson Heights location in 1970. From 1975 to the present, the College has continuously made enhancements to resources in order to develop and maintain an outstanding learning environment for the students. The onset of additional degree program offerings, expansion of the library, an Internet Center, Learning Resources Center, and Medical Laboratory are just a few major facility enhancements.
Academic support, counseling, and placement services reach out to each student, ensuring a successful educational experience. The development of computer facilities, course offerings, and a wireless network on campus, amongst other enhancements to the Plaza College community, clearly reflect Plaza’s history of responding to dramatic changes in technology and the nature of business. From a historical perspective, notable events include the following:
1975: Development of its two-year programs.
1982: Authorization by the Board of Regents of the State of New York to confer the degree of Associate in Occupational Studies (A.O.S.).
1988: Authorization to confer the degree of Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.).
2004: Authorization to confer the degree of Associate in Occupational Studies – Medical Assisting (A.O.S.).
2006: Authorization to confer the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.).
2007: Secured a 10-year re-accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools for "being a student-centered institution that goes above and beyond normal expectations to ensure the success of its students."
2008: Received accreditation from CAAHEP for the Medical Assisting programs; became Queens County's first CAAHEP-accredited college.
2009: Authorization to confer the Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Patient Information Management; authorization to confer the Associate in Health Services Information Technology.
The College continues to closely monitor career opportunities in New York City, as evident by our first healthcare career program in medical assisting and the College’s advancement to the baccalaureate level, providing additional opportunities for both students and alumni.
